Top 5 Essential Oils to Combat Stress & 5 Easy Ways to Use Them

There are so so many ways to incorporate essential oils into your daily wellness routine. One of our favorite ways to use essential oils is to help wind down and relax.

Humans have more than 50 million smell receptors, which all have an impact on our emotions, limbic system, and even libido levels. The oils listed in this article help to calm the nerves and help you unwind. These essential oils are especially great for folks that suffer from chronic stress and fatigue too!

This article will show you which essential oils are the best to combat stress, along with easy ways that you can use them.

Here are the top 5 stress-busting essential oils:

1. Bergamot

With its distinctive floral aroma and taste, Bergamot oil is a common ingredient in Earl Grey tea, which is why you might feel a little more chilled out after a good cuppa. The oil is believed to help reduce anxiety, allowing you to feel more relaxed.

Bergamot is also antibacterial and has soothing, anti-spasmodic, analgesic, and antiseptic properties, which means that it’s versatile enough to be used for a number of physical and mental health benefits as well.

2. Chamomile

Chamomile essential oil is very calming. It promotes an “inner self” balance, and may also help in relieving anxiety and irritability. Studies have shown that chamomile may help patients with depression, and it can also help you doze off faster to get a better night’s sleep. Since chamomile is a stress-soother, it can also help relieve stress-induced anxiety.

3. Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang is a plant extract that can help boost your mood and calm your nerves. It has been used as a remedy to reduce nervousness, stress, and insomnia. When used along with Bergamot and lavender essential oils, studies have found that ylang ylang may help lower blood pressure.

Ylang ylang has been called an aphrodisiac because it can calm or stimulate, depending on what needs to be blanked out. For those battling with anger issues, ylang ylang can help you keep your cool, while those suffering from fatigue may get an energy boost from the essential oil.

It’s important to note that ylang ylang should not be used if you have very low blood pressure, as it may worsen the condition.

4. Lavender

Lavender is probably one of the most common essential oils out there, which also means that it can be used for a wide range of applications. It’s extremely helpful as a natural remedy to help soothe stress and may also promote a more calm demeanor. You can use lavender essential oil to help with sleeplessness, irritability, nervousness, and restlessness.

5. Rose

Rose essential oil is also a very popular plant extract, and the reason why isn’t hard to understand. Rose oil may help calm the emotional heart, which means that its can be very beneficial for those suffering from stress and anxiety. It is also believed to boost self-esteem and improve general mood.

How to Use Essential Oils for Stress Relief

We’ve shown you what oils to use, so now let’s learn how to use them. These methods are pretty self-explanatory. Try them all and just stick to one that’s most effective for you!

1. Stop and smell the oils

Aromatherapy! This is pretty easy, and it can be enough essential power to shift your mental gears up a notch. All you need to do is take a good whiff or two of the essential oil to get an instant boost.

2. Harness the power of a shower

By adding a few drops of essential oil to your shower floor before you turn the water on, you’ll be creating an “essential oil steam room” for a spa-like experience.

By doing this, you’ll be exposing your whole body to the good stuff, allowing your mind and emotions to be calmed and your aura to be cleansed. Plus it smells amazing and gives your shower a welcome boost!

3. Take an Epsom salt bath

One of my favorite ways to unwind is by mixing Epsom salt with essential oils. Feel free to check out these twelve different Epsom salt bath recipes from my blog.

Here’s my personal favorite Epsom salt bath recipe:

Instructions:

  • (Optional) Split the vanilla pod lengthways and scrape the seeds out into the bowl with the salts.
  • Finely grate the cocoa butter and mix with the salt and vanilla seeds.
  • Add the essential oils and stir really well to blend.
  • Transfer the mixture to a jar and leave for a few days to infuse before using.
  • Add a handful to your bath and enjoy!

4. Go ahead and cover yourself in it!

Grab 3 teaspoons of a carrier oil, like grapeseed or coconut oil, and then mix it with roughly 10-20 drops of essential oil (your choice what type!). Mix it all together and voila . . . you’ll have a homemade calming, soothing body oil that can be applied all over your body.

But if you’re not keen on slathering it all over your body, just massage it into your hands and feet to help you unwind.

5. Try a diffuser

A traditional oil burner (the one with the candle) or a little essential oil diffuser can work wonders to help you calm down and de-stress when you’re at home. You can use about 10 drops of essential oil in a diffuser to help you settle down after a long day.

We recommend this essential oil diffuser from ZAQ.
