5 New Years Resolution Ideas That Will Set You Up for Your Best Year Yet!

If you’re looking for new years resolution ideas, you’ve come to the right place. Setting a resolution that you’d like to accomplish in the new year is a common practice that can be powerful and empowering – if you go about it the right way.

Every year, we approach creating a new years resolution list with motivation and excitement – feeling ready to do whatever it takes to stay committed to the goals we’ve created for ourselves.

Often, only a few short weeks in, our efforts start to diminish as we begin to feel like our resolutions aren’t as attainable as we originally imagined.

The key to following through with your resolutions is to always work with yourself, not against yourself.

The key to following through with your resolutions is to always work with yourself, not against yourself. Only choose resolutions that you’re confident you’ll be able to achieve by making sure they’re both realistic and sustainable for the long term.

Finding new years resolutions that you’re positive you can stick with can be difficult, so we’ve created a list of achievable new years resolution ideas that are worth setting and realistic to achieve.

Here Are 5 New Years Resolution Ideas That Will Set You Up for Your Best Year Yet:

These ideas will help you find new years resolutions that will help you grow and thrive, and also establish a deeper sense of self-compassion along the way. 🙂

1. First Decide What You’re Leaving Behind

In order to determine what we seek to manifest and cultivate in our lives in the new year, we must first identify what we’re leaving behind. What are you ready to let go of before you step into a new year?

Perhaps you’ve pinpointed a habit that’s not in alignment with your lifestyle or goals. Maybe there’s an element of self-sabotage, or a toxic relationship you don’t want to continue.

The first new years resolution idea on the list is to make sure that you’re clear on what you don’t want, so you can make time and mental space to usher in what you do want!

2. Do Something Each Month That Intimidates You

Trying new things, especially when they’re a little freaky, can be challenging, but it’s absolutely essential for personal growth. New experiences help keep your mind open, your curiosity alive, and your life interesting!

And truly, these new experiences can be as miniscule or monumental as you wish. You can try a new food, take a new class, find a new hairstyle, or you can go skydiving, hike a mountain, or even hold a tarantula.

3. Schedule “Me Time”

Start planning for, and literally penciling in “Me Time.” Add it to your daily schedule so you never forget to take this all-important, re-energizing time for yourself. Me time = self-care. And self-care is key to not just achieving your goals, but enjoying the process.

Once it’s scheduled into your day, the chances of you doing it become much greater! Pick up a book, take a well deserved nap, get a cute manicure, take a yoga class, or do anything else makes you feel good.

Spend Your “Me Time” Taking an Online Class!

Included in this “me time” is doing something that intimidates you (see #2). All of this helps you grow and thrive!

Pro Tip: Treat this special time like you would an important appointment, and make sure not to cancel on yourself!

4. Make Decluttering an Ongoing Practice

Energetically, a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind. Or, a cluttered mind is reflected in a physically cluttered space.

Either way, taking time on a regular basis to declutter our space (and not just once during Spring cleaning) can work wonders for our mental state. Whether you choose to declutter one room (or area in your home) each month, or commit to an ongoing practice of cleaning, organizing, and decluttering, the results will speak for themselves!

5. Mindfully Eliminate a Negative Habit

Whether it’s staying up too late, smoking cigarettes or spending too much time on social media, eliminate the habits that simply do not empower you.

Or perhaps you’ve fallen into the habit of thinking negatively. If this is you, become aware of your thoughts, complaints, and words and make a conscious effort to replace them with positive ones . . . because positive thoughts create a positive life! Try it out and see what happens!

Maintaining a positive mindset will make all of your other new years resolution ideas easier to attain.

Take time to mindfully recognize a current habit you have that is negative, but don’t bring judgment or shame to the table. Instead, come up with a plan of action on how you can eliminate them. Your personal growth depends on it!

Remember – it can take up to 66 days to break a habit!

Pro Tip: Notice how your habit makes you feel, and in turn how eliminating it makes you feel. For example: do yourself a favor and replace 20 minutes of screen time a day with some sort of analog activity!

BONUS Idea: Choose Presence and Gratitude Daily

Bonus new years resolution idea! The truth of the matter is that you can’t change the past and you can’t predict the future. Instead, empower your personal growth by choosing to stay present in the moment and focus on gratitude. It’s a choice you can choose each and every day!

It’s in your best interest to focus on making the best of the present moment. Some fantastic ways to find presence and gratitude are meditation, saying “thank you,” and telling people how much you love and appreciate them.

“I figure life’s a gift and I don’t intend on wasting it. You don’t know what hand you’re gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you … to make each day count.” -Jack Dawson, Titanic

Pro Tip: Whenever you find yourself out of presence and gratitude, remind yourself to stop and take a breath – trade in that negativity for a reminder of the present moment.

These New Year Resolutions Ideas Will Cultivate More Self-Compassion and Personal Growth <3

As you begin thinking about your new Years resolution ideas, write them as a list of both big and small goals you’d like to accomplish in the new year. Create a timeline of when you’d like to complete these goals, starting with the easily accomplished and working your way up to the more difficult ones.

The best part? This list of resolution ideas isn’t written in stone! You can continually make additions and revisions to your list as time goes by.

Pro Tip: Keep your list somewhere you’ll see everyday. That could be in your day planner, on your computer screen, on sticky notes stuck to a mirror, or even on a vision board.

Whether or not you try any of these new years resolution ideas or create your own, remember that just because it’s the start of the new year, it doesn’t mean this is your only opportunity to start over or switch things up!

While it’s always fun to kick off a new year with some bright and shiny resolutions, keep in mind that for true personal growth you should be treating every day of the year as you would the first day of the year!

Consistently choose personal growth every day! Be more kind to yourself and others, be more grateful, and even cultivate more self-compassion (something we all deserve and can benefit from).
