Hi friends,

How many times today have you checked your email, your calendar, the weather, the news, or social media?

We’re constantly checking in with the world around us. But how often do we pause to check in with ourselves?

Not the surface-level, “I’m good!” that we so often default to. But a genuine, honest check-in.

How am I, really?

This question has become one of my favorite rituals during our monthly YouAligned Member Meetup. Before we celebrate wins, ask questions, or dive into conversation, we pause. We take a deep breath. And we check in with ourselves.

As I’ve reflected on these gatherings, I’ve realized how rarely most of us give ourselves this gift.
August feels like the perfect time to pause. Before we shift into back-to-school schedules, busier routines, and planning for the months ahead, perhaps we can first take a moment to notice where we are right now.

No fixing. No judging.

Just noticing.

So today, I’d love to offer you the same invitation I offer our members each month.

Consider this your gentle self check-in. 🙂

1. Start With Your Body

Close your eyes for a moment and take a slow, full breath. Notice what it feels like to simply be present in your body.

Then gently ask yourself:

  • How has my body been feeling lately?
  • What sensations have I been ignoring?
  • What does my body need more of?
  • What does it need less of?

Our bodies are always communicating with us. Sometimes we simply get too busy to listen.

2. Check In With Your Mind

Now bring your awareness to your thoughts.

  • What has been taking up the most mental space lately?
  • Are those thoughts helping me or draining me?
  • What would I like to think less about?
  • What deserves more of my attention instead?

You don’t need to control or chase every thought that arises. Sometimes simply noticing our patterns is enough to begin changing them.

3. Listen to Your Heart (Seriously)

Place a hand over your heart and take a few deep breaths as you feel your heartbeat.

Then ask yourself:

  • What has been bringing me genuine joy lately?
  • What has been weighing on my heart?
  • Is there anything I’ve been carrying that I’m ready to put down?
  • Where have I felt most like myself?

These questions don’t require immediate answers. Sometimes they simply create space for our inner wisdom to rise to the surface.

4. Now Celebrate Yourself

This is one we often skip. We’re quick to notice everything we haven’t done yet, but we rarely pause to acknowledge how far we’ve come.

So ask yourself:

  • What am I genuinely proud of?
  • What challenge have I navigated with courage?
  • What small win deserves to be celebrated?

Growth isn’t only found in the big milestones. More often, it’s found in the quiet moments when we choose kindness over criticism, presence over distraction, or courage over comfort.
Those moments count. Big time.

5. Set a Gentle Intention

Rather than asking, “What do I need to accomplish today?” try asking something a little different.

  • How do I want to feel?
  • What do I want more of?
  • What kind of person do I want to be this month?

Maybe your intention is to be more present. Or to spend more time outside. To laugh more. To rest without guilt (this is my husband’s intention). To trust yourself a little more (this is mine).
Whatever rises to the surface, let it be enough.

One of the greatest gifts of a self check-in is that it reminds us that we already carry so much wisdom within us. We don’t always need another resource, another technique, or another opinion. Sometimes we simply need to create enough quiet to hear our own.

As we move through this new month together, my hope is that you’ll return to these questions whenever life starts feeling especially full or overwhelming.

Because the most important conversation you have this week may not be with someone else… It may be the one you have with yourself. And what a beautiful gift that would be!

With love,
Ashton
