How to Create the Perfect Yoga Space in 3 Easy Steps (In Any Size Home!)

There’s nothing like the serenity that comes from a home practice and creating a personalized yoga space just adds to the enjoyment.

Yet while you dream of a spacious yoga room complete with hardwood floors and more than enough room to flip and flow, sometimes your space can be less than accommodating.

Don’t stress! No matter what size your room may be, creating a space that uplifts and inspires your practice can be easy and fun – let us show you how, regardless of your space’s size!

Select an area or corner of your home that you feel drawn to and follow these three crucial steps. They’ll not only help you prep and prime but will make your space seem ten times larger.

1. Minimize the Clutter

If you wake up from Savasana only to be greeted by piles upon piles of stuff, those stress-busting effects are going to be short-lived. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter you feel, and how much larger your space seems when your area has gone through a heavy decluttering audit.

2. Lighten and Brighten Your Space

Perhaps you’re someone who enjoys a heavy, darker vibe during your practice in which case you’ll want to steer clear of windows or choose to add window coverings. But keep in mind, the darker the area, the more closed off it will feel.

If, on the other hand, you’re someone who’s inspired by natural light, set up your space near a balcony or window. You could even place mirrors strategically around the area to reflect the light, open up the space, and add a bright, airy vibe to your practice.

3. Choose the Right Color

You may not realize how important the role your wall colors play in your soon-to-be yoga space. It’s a cardinal rule that darker colors tend to make rooms feel smaller by absorbing light, while brighter colors open them up due to their reflective properties.

So even if you once loved the edgy paint shade of dark navy Midnight Magic that currently adorns your walls, you may want to consider swapping it out for a lighter-hued blue. If you can’t or don’t want to go so far as painting, you can always add colorful pillows or tapestries to brighten up your space.

Personalize Your Yoga Space with Your 5 Senses

Now that the area has been maximized to its potential and is a blank slate, it’s time to add those personalized touches. You may be overwhelmed at which items to choose for such a sacred (albeit small) area, but with a little direction from your senses, you’ll be downward-dogging it in no time.

1. Sight

You want your home yoga space to inspire you the second you set eyes on it, so be sure to pick items that create that feeling. Consider leaving your mat open and unrolled at all times as a simple reminder to come and visit.

See if you can get your hands on a small altar or table, and pick 1-2 items to place upon it. Some of our favorites include miniature Buddha statues, mirrors, or framed graphics.

2. Smell

Believe it or not, your olfactory senses trigger brain activity in very unique ways. Depending on the scent, they can bring up feelings of resentment or calm. You’re after the latter so select a candle, diffuser, or incense set that is small enough to blend into your space but still gets the job done.

Some of our favorite scents for a practice session include lavender, which is widely known for its relaxing effects, or lemon, which serves to energize and inspire.

3. Touch

Ritualistic mala beads make for the perfect embodiment of this sense and can aid you in your meditation and mantras. Each strand is composed of 108 beads and can vary in size and weight.

We recommend choosing one that is light enough to drape across a table or photo frame, or small enough to hang from a statue.

4. Sound

Like your olfactory senses, your auditory capabilities are strongly connected to your overall emotions. If you’re a nature lover, you might want to get your hands on some small hanging or table chimes.

Or, to cut the clutter down even further, simply download a playlist to your mobile device and bring it with you to your practice. Now that’s music to our ears.

5. Taste

There’s seldom anything that a good yoga or meditation session and a cup of tea can’t fix. Before each practice, set some organic tea to steep in a mug or teapot and place it where you can see it.

This triple threat allows you to smell the scent that’s brewing, view the curly wisps of steam, and ultimately indulge in a soothing treat.

Let Your Home Yoga Space Reflect You

Like you, your dedicated yoga space is going to evolve and change over time, and that’s okay. Be it small or large, as long as it’s an outer reflection of the way you feel (or wish to feel), it is just right.
