When you shop your grocery store shelves and pick out your favorite foods and treats, you may not pay a lot of attention to the packaging. But, did you know that many major name brand foods and beverages sold across the world are packaged with materials containing BPA, a toxic chemical that is linked to reproductive health issues and cancer?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just launched a new database that will help you identify food products that are sold in packaging that contains BPA. BPA – or Bisphenol A – is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that alters hormones in your body and is linked to health complications such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, infertility, and abnormalities of the nervous and cardiovascular systems.
Due to the high levels of hormone disrupting estrogen, BPA should be kept away from pregnant women and children during critical stages of development.
Did you know that food and beverage packaging is the main source of BPA exposure? BPA can be found in the lining or lids of tin and aluminum cans and even glass jars, aerosol cans, and plastic and glass bottles.
BPA is not just in canned foods as many thought in the past!
BPA is not just in canned foods as many thought in the past!
The new database, the “BPA Bombshell,” lists 16,000+ foods and beverages from more than 900 brands that you have come to know and trust that contain BPA. The EWG compiled this list based on information that was added to food industry websites, as brands complied with California Prop 65 regulations.
You might be surprised at some of the major brands, organic foods and even private label items from Trader Joe’s on the list!
Want a root beer float? Don’t choose A&W Root Beer!
In the mood for salsa on Taco Tuesday? Don’t try Trader Joe’s Mild Chunky Salsa.
Don’t use Kirkland Signature Organic Tomato Paste as a thickener for your pasta sauce. You guessed it. It’s on the list, too!
Did your favorite foods and brands make the no-no list? Check out the list here and see for yourself.
