The Benefits of Applesauce

If you are trying to boost your nutrient count and lower your calories, applesauce is a great choice.

It’s commonly used to replace oil, and a simple analysis shows why. A half of a cup of homemade applesauce contains 50 calories, no fat and plenty of vitamin C. Compare that to 964 calories of vegetable oil, delivering 109 grams of fat and no vitamins, and the choice is pretty clear.

You can choose any sweet apple for this recipe, but we like the Golden Delicious variety. Golden Delicious apples are a good source of potassium, iron and zinc, as well as being rich in antioxidants.

Making these moist, fluffy applesauce cookies is a breeze. The dough doesn’t require chilling, and the steps are simple, just whisk and bake! Best of all? These cookies are ready in under an hour and make the whole house smell fabulous. Let’s get started.

Applesauce Cookie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce (to make your own, see below)
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp coconut flour
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseeds
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp Himalayan or sea salt
  • ¼ cup sugar-free dark chocolate chips (look for dark chocolate with stevia or coconut sugar)

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F/175 degrees C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the applesauce, almond butter, egg and vanilla. Whisk for two or three minutes or until fully blended.

Step 3: Add the coconut flour, ground flaxseed, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Stir until well blended. The batter should be smooth.

Step 4: Add the dark chocolate chips to the batter, stirring thoroughly through the mix. Let the batter sit for five minutes to thicken.

Step 5: Using a large cookie scoop or spoon, scoop the batter onto the lined baking pan. Each cookie consists of about two tablespoons of batter.

Step 6: Bake for 10-12 minutes, being careful not to overcook.
Check that the applesauce cookies are ready by placing a knife into the center–the cookies are ready when the knife comes out clean. If there is dough on the knife, bake for a few more minutes.

This applesauce cookie recipe yields about 10-12 cookies.

Make Your Own Applesauce

You might be able to find store-bought unsweetened applesauce with no additives, but this applesauce is so simple to make, we recommend you follow the recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 4 whole organic apples (pick a sweet variety like Golden Delicious)
  • 1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice
  • ½ tsp of Ceylon cinnamon
  • ¼ cup of water

Instructions:

Step 1: Core and seed the apples, leaving the peel on. Cut the apples into quarters and then into smaller pieces.

Step 2: In a medium saucepan, mix the water, the cinnamon and the apple pieces. Stir the cinnamon and water over the apple pieces. Cover and cook over a medium heat until the apples simmer. Reduce the heat to low/medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender (usually 15-20 minutes).

Step 3: Remove the apples from the saucepan and transfer to a blender or food processor. Add the lemon juice and blend until smooth.

Step 4: Let the applesauce cool and transfer into mason jars.

This recipe yields approximately 12 ounces of applesauce. If refrigerated, the applesauce can last up to five days.

Should I Buy Organic Apples?

It’s worth noting that YES it is a good investment to buy organic apples when making this applesauce cookie recipe and homemade applesauce. The average conventionally grown apple has more pesticide residue on it than any other fruit or vegetable, and the 2022 Environmental Working Group’s analysis listed apples as #5 of the dirty dozen.

The good news is organic apples don’t need to be expensive – shop around or even consider planting your own apple tree.
