Get the Lowdown on SCOBY – The Most Important Kombucha Tea Ingredient

A SCOBY may look like a creepy alien, but our bodies are a big fan of this gelly, live culture. SCOBY stands for Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. This live culture is the heart and soul of kombucha and although it isn’t very pleasant to look at, it is surely vital.

Making kombucha at home is a simple process that can be done in just a few minutes and is much more affordable than store-bought kombucha. One gallon (128 fl oz) of homebrewed kombucha costs less than $3, where a 16 fl oz bottle of store-bought kombucha can range anywhere from $3 – $7.

Brewing your own kombucha is definitely the way to go and it is an incredibly fulfilling process as you are drinking a healthy product of your own creation. Kombucha is all the rage these days for its wide range of health benefits, including immunity boost and gut health.

What is a SCOBY and What Are Its Health Benefits?

The Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast is a bit nasty looking, and definitely interesting to the touch, but it is simply a home for live bacteria and yeast to live and grow. Think of it as a nest to host baby bacteria and yeast.

A SCOBY is often referred as “the mother” or “the mushroom” by kombucha brewers. It’s all the same thing regardless of what you call it.

Life starts and ends in the gut and drinking kombucha is a great way to support gut, brain, and total body health.

The SCOBY floats on the top of your kombucha and grows thicker over time – as you brew each batch the SCOBY will increase in density, size, and will eventually reproduce to create more layers of “the mother.”

This gelly powerhouse can save you quite a few bucks on your ‘booch habit and will help you better appreciate and understand the process of brewing kombucha!

Where Can You Get a SCOBY?

SCOBYs are available in many health food stores and online. You can also procure one from a ‘booch brewing friend who has layers of SCOBY to share.

As the SCOBY reproduces quite quickly (over a few consistent brews), it is easy to remove a layer and share with a friend who is interested in getting their own home-brew practice rolling.

You can also grow a SCOBY from nothing! You’ve probably bought a bottle of kombucha with stringy floaty things it is, right? Well that’s a baby SCOBY! If you place that in a jar, leave it in a dark place, and feed it with sugar, then you’ll eventually have a full grown SCOBY ready to make some kombucha magic happen.

SCOBYs are alive and need nutrients just like the rest of us to thrive and make our kombucha as fizzy and tasty as possible. Which leads us to the next main point . . .

What Do You Feed a SCOBY?

A SCOBY only eats sugar. Traditionally (for literally thousands of years), kombucha was brewed with 100% cane sugar. Now in modern times, we have many different types of natural sugar available to us – but the SCOBY really does thrive with organic, non-GMO, natural cane sugar.

While you may be thinking, “I don’t want to be drinking sugar! Why is it in my kombucha?” Simmer down . . . the sugar isn’t for you, it’s for your SCOBY.

A large percentage of the sugar will be consumed and converted by the SCOBY and it won’t even make it to your glass or mouth. If you’ve ever tasted kombucha, you can verify that it actually tastes more like apple cider vinegar than it does sugar.

What Are the Health Benefits of Drinking Kombucha?

Kombucha is an incredible beverage to bring balance, regularity, peace, and relief to your digestive system with probiotics. But the benefits don’t stop in your gut! The gut and brain are deeply connected through the vagus nerve and the bacteria that lives in the gut literally communicates with the brain.

This ancient symbiotic relationship between gut bacteria and the brain is formed in the womb and will always be one of the most important relationships in the human body. Life starts and ends in the gut and kombucha is a great way to support gut, brain, and total body health.

By drinking kombucha regularly, you can support the “good” bacteria in your gut (the bacteria that aids with digestion, mood, bowel movements, food allergies, etc) and help eradicate the “bad” bacteria (bacteria that creates an imbalance, constipation, irregularity, and mood swings).

Embrace the SCOBY and Drink Kombucha For a Healthy Life!

The benefits of kombucha are ancient and far-reaching for your holistic health. Brewing kombucha at home is easy and yields a batch that is much cheaper than purchasing kombucha from the store.

Take your health into your own hands and get a SCOBY to start a kombucha homebrew practice. Cheers to your radiant health!
