How to Make the Best Homemade Almond Butter On the Cheap (Recipe)

I love almond butter, but the store-bought kind is just so damn expensive. Ya girl’s on a budget! When I started transitioning to a more zero waste lifestyle, I realized I could make many of my favorite things for much cheaper than I could find in the store. So, today I give you . . . homemade almond butter!

The secret? Shop the bulk bins at your favorite local grocery store or market.

Bulk bins tend to have better prices on typically expensive items, like almonds, and they offer you the opportunity to completely ditch out on packaging if you bring your own bulk bags.

Delicious Homemade Almond Butter Recipe

Fills a 12-ounce Mason Jar | Difficulty: Easy | Cost: $5

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces of raw almonds
  • Pinch of salt (optional)
  •
Yep, that’s it! It’s important to note that raw almonds to homemade almond butter is a 1:1 ratio, so if you have a bigger jar and want more almond butter, adjust accordingly!

    Preparation

Set your oven to 350 degrees. While the oven is heating up, line a cookie sheet with a single layer of all the raw almonds. Roast for 5 minutes, then stir them up on the pan and roast for another 5 minutes.

Let the roasted almonds cool so they’re still warm, but no longer piping hot.

Add roasted almonds and salt to a high-powered food processor or blender. Now, have a spatula handy, put on your patience cap, and trust the process.

    process

As you blend the almonds stop every now and then to scrape down the sides of the bowl with your spatula. You’ll first get almond flour, then, as the mixture heats up and releases natural oils, you’ll get a big ball of almond dough. Then, finally, you’ll get delicious, creamy homemade almond butter.

    Enjoy Your Homemade Almond Butter!

    final

All said and done this process takes about 20 minutes, and costs about half of what store-bought almond butter will run you. That’s an easy, no-brainer trade off for a delicious treat if you ask me! Another cool perk is this recipe can be made completely zero-waste by shopping bulk and using (or reusing) your own jars.

    Have fun and enjoy!
