Why More Men Should Be Doing Yoga (Video)
“To most guys, yoga is pink lycra and vegan chicks. It’s breathing deeply while doing poses named after animals and feelings. It’s done in dimly lit rooms with candles and incense, followed by gluten free cupcakes and kale smoothies. And if that’s your mentality then you’re not alone. But it doesn’t mean it’s right.” This quote is from the Boys of Yoga, a group of guys representing the “uncelebrated minority.”
Let’s face it. Yoga is viewed by some as a female-dominant practice. Of course this isn’t true, and there are plenty of male yogis doing their thang around the globe. If we get back to the root of yoga, it’s an ancient practice that numerous men (from BKS Iyengar, Paramahansa Yogananda, and Bikram Choudhury just to name a few) are in large part responsible for bringing to the West. Nevertheless, this “pink lycra” stereotype is widespread, yet vastly false, which makes it worth addressing.
Yoga isn’t just for your mom, your sister or your girlfriend anymore. It’s time to smash the stereotype.
The Boys of Yoga believe in the strength, flexibility, and agility that yoga brings on and off the mat. They have started a movement, and deserve some recognition. We love what they’re up to, and suspect you will too. This video goes out to all the yoga guys out there. Watch their awesome video, and visit boysofyoga.com to learn more.
