Great News! Here Are 8 Health Benefits of Having Sex Regularly

Sex and sexuality are a natural part of life. It isn’t all about reproduction either. The act of sex can be fun, intimate, connecting, liberating, and healthy. Yes! There are countless health benefits of sex and having sex regularly.

Sexual health is so much more than avoiding pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections and diseases. It is also about recognizing the importance and value of a healthy sex life. This article will explore some of the amazing benefits that come with having sex.

Sex can provide far more benefits beyond the enjoyment of the moment.

Given that so many of us have incredibly busy lives, it can be difficult to fit a healthy sex life in. Especially if you don’t recognize or understand that sex can provide far more benefits beyond the enjoyment of the moment.

This Might Be Why Your Sex Drive Is MIA (And What To Do About It)

However, quite frankly, the enjoyment of that moment is a big enough benefit that each of us should make sex a priority in our lives. Doing things that are enjoyable with your partner/s is incredibly important to your mental health and relationship health.

If fun isn’t enough to convince you to pencil sex into your schedule as soon as possible, then perhaps the ten health benefits of sex will . . . Read on!

Here Are 8 Science-Backed Health Benefits of Sex:

Having sex, and having regular sex specifically, brings with it a seductive range of benefits physically and mentally. The good news is, you have even more reason to stay in bed! 😉

1. Promotes a Healthy Immune System

Sex can help your immune system? Yes! More frequent sex can actually lead to a healthier immune system.

Looking for more ways to boost immunity? Here Are 6 Simple, Science-Backed Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System

A recent research study found that people who had frequent sex, which they defined as one to two times per week, had more immunoglobin A (IgA) in their system than others.

IgA is an antibody that lives within the mucosal tissue, such as in the salivary glands, vaginal tissue, and nose. Interestingly enough, this particular antibody is the body’s first line of defense with human papillomavirus, or HPV, as well as other infections.

It is important to note here that, despite how much sex you have, you should still make sure to do all of the other things needed to maintain a health immune system, such as: eating healthy, staying active, and getting enough sleep.

2. Sex Can Boost Cognition

Studies have shown a correlation between a healthy sex life and better cognition in older men. A 2016 study explored the possible mediating factors between cognition and an active sex life in men and women between the ages of 50 and 89.

Researchers found that sexually active men had an increased cognitive function, as measured by number sequencing and word recall. Women had the same benefit with regards to word recall but not number sequencing.

However, both men and women who were more sexually active did better on the test in the study than those who had less sex.

3. Sex Can Reduce Pain

Instead of reaching for an aspirin the next time you get a headache, you might consider getting a little frisky instead.

A German research study found that sexual activity can reduce menstrual cramps, leg pain, migraines, arthritic pain, and chronic back and leg pain. The researchers conducted a survey of 1,000 people who suffer from headaches.

Instead of reaching for an aspirin the next time you get a headache, consider getting a little frisky instead.

Results showed that 30% of those with cluster headaches and 60% of those with migraines reported that they find partial or total relief from their pain if they have sex during a headache episode.

Barry Komisaruk, an orgasm researcher at Rutgers University, explains that orgasms can block pain because a hormone is released that helps to raise your pain threshold.

In addition, “the sensory input produced by vaginal stimulation produces a powerful analgesic effect.”

Thankfully, this analgesic effect does not interfere with tactile sensitivity. Pain reduction is not reliant upon orgasm though. Komisaruk pointed out that stimulation without orgasm can also work to relieve pain, making this a great health benefit of regular sex.

4. Sex and Orgasms Can Improve Your Sleep

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sexual activity has hormonal benefits for sleep. The hormones that help to reduce anxiety and stress are also responsible for inducing sleepiness.

During sex, the body releases oxytocin, dopamine, and endorphins. After orgasm is reached, a hormone called prolactin is released into the body.

Prolactin is a hormone that relaxes you. It is the combination of prolactin and the other hormones that help you to sleep so well after sex. Scientists suggest having an orgasm with a partner/s, if possible, to reach the highest levels of prolactin in the body.

A research study showed that the level of prolactin in the body after sexual intercourse is 400% greater than after masturbation. Yet another excuse to enjoy regular sex!

5. Ease Your Stress

Stress is something that every human has to deal with. Research has shown that hugging and other forms of non-sexual touch can cause your brain to release oxytocin, the “bonding hormone,” into the body.

The release of oxytocin stimulates the brain to also release other feel-good hormones, dopamine and serotonin, while simultaneously reducing the stress hormones, such as cortisol and norepinephrine. Talk about an amazing mental health benefit of sex!

So, if touch alone can do all of that, it makes sense that sex can easily reduce stress in the body and mind.

In 2019, researchers were able to show just that. The results of the study indicated that sexual intimacy with a partner helped bring cortisol levels back into normal range for both males and females.

6. Increase Your Libido

It seems counterintuitive to think that sex could increase libido, but it does! Well, I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage, “The more often you complete a task, the better you become at doing it.” The same goes for regular sex.

Each time you have sex, you will learn a little more about what you like and don’t like and what works for you and what doesn’t work. You will also learn what your partner/s likes and doesn’t like and what works form them and what doesn’t.

Having better sexual experiences tends to increase your desire for sex.

Simply put, having better sexual experiences tends to increase your desire for sex. It will be worthwhile to spend some quality time focusing on foreplay. Kissing, touching, using sex toys, and exploring oral sex are all key to learning what makes you and your partner/s find orgasm.

Foreplay is especially important for women. Research indicates that approximately 18% of women are able to orgasm from penetration alone whereas 33.6% of women report that clitoral stimulation is required for orgasm to occur.

7. Specific Health Benefits of Sex for Women

There are some health benefits of sex that are specific to female gendered bodies. During sexual arousal, the pelvic floor is typically activated and engaged. Meaning that the muscles contract in response to your pleasure.

This results in strengthening the pelvic floor which aids in the following:

  • Improved bladder control
  • Reduced incontinence
  • Improved fertility
  • Relief of menstrual and premenstrual cramps
  • Increased vaginal lubrication
  • Potential protection against endometriosis (the growing of tissue outside your uterus)
  • Less pain during intercourse
  • Reduced risk of vaginal prolapse

In addition, women who remain sexually active after menopause are much less likely to suffer from vaginal atrophy which is the thinning of the vaginal walls. Vaginal atrophy can lead to extremely painful sex and pain during urination.

8. Specific Health Benefits of Sex for Men

There are some health benefits of sex that are specific to male gendered bodies. One of the biggest is the reduced risk of prostate cancer. A recent study found men who had more frequent penile-vaginal intercourse were at less of a risk for developing prostate cancer.

Similarly, a Harvard Medical School study showed that men who averaged between 4.6 to 7 ejaculations per week were 36% less likely to develop prostate cancer before the age of 70.

For men, sex has even shown to affect mortality rates. A Planned Parenthood study reported that men who had frequent orgasms, defined as two or more times a week, had a 50% lower mortality risk than those who had sex less often.
