This 3-Ingredient DIY Toothpaste Recipe Is Natural, Eco-Friendly + Takes 5 Minutes to Make

With only 5 minutes of your time, you can make a yummy, toxic-free DIY toothpaste that gives you that oh-so-fresh feeling. This DIY toothpaste recipe helps prevent bad bacteria, whiten your teeth, and (since you’ll make it yourself) it’s eco-friendly with no packaging.
Most of our personal hygiene and self-care routines are shockingly wasteful and toxic.
Shampoos, razors, tampons, toothbrushes, toothpaste – all come in plastic and/or are made of plastic. No wonder we’ve already accumulated upward of 9.1 billion tons of plastic waste in the world and continue piling it up.
The good news: While we obviously can’t influence the overall waste we produce as humans, our toiletries are quite easy to tackle!
Want to make your own makeup? I wrote an article about that too! Learn How to Make Your Own DIY 3-Ingredient Bronzer Here
But first, read four main reasons why you should consider switching toothpastes . . .
Here Are 4 Reasons to Ditch Conventional Toothpaste:
1. Conventional toothpaste is “plastic-full”
A conventional toothpaste not only usually comes in a plastic tube (that lives for ages) but also contains microbeads – little microplastic particles that work as exfoliators. Yet, these guys are so small that when washed down the sink, the water treatment facilities can’t filter them out.
Eventually, they end up deep in our oceans polluting them and putting the marine wildlife at risk. Easy solution: Avoid, avoid, avoid!
2. You’ll get naturally whiter teeth
Surprise, surprise! When it comes to teeth whitening, a natural toothpaste (especially this one) is more effective.
Thank the two magic ingredients: coconut oil and baking soda. Coconut oil creates a thick paste-like texture, kills bad bacteria, and according to Ayurveda, it whitens teeth too (which I can confirm based on my personal experience).
Curious about Ayurveda? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
Baking soda helps to remove plague and stabilize pH balance in your mouth. This prevents bad breath, tooth decay, and makes teeth shiny white.

3. Avoid the harmful side-effects of fluoride
Toothpaste manufacturers typically add fluoride into their products to prevent tooth decay. However, many people argue that too much exposure to fluoride can potentially be toxic for us.
True or not, using a natural toothpaste prevents any potential risks of fluoride overexposure. With the active ingredients we use instead in this DIY recipe, we can help prevent tooth decay as well.
4. You’ll save $$, your health, and the planet
Rather than paying for fancy store-bought products that cost triple the price, you can save your hard-earned money, your health, and the planet. All the ingredients in this DIY toothpaste recipe are easily accessible and relatively cheap.
So, shall we get cranking? Here’s the epic 3-ingredient toothpaste recipe you’ve been waiting for.

There you have it – your very own DIY toothpaste!
Now you can enjoy your fresh, silky smooth teeth, feeling that you just saved tons of microbeads from releasing into the ocean, and skipped a plastic tube.
A Final Note About Your DIY Toothpaste
Unfortunately, even the natural products have some flaws.
The downside of this DIY toothpaste recipe? It might make your sink a little greasy. This is because this toothpaste contains coconut oil and after you brush your teeth, water alone won’t wash it away. (Pro tip: warm water does help.)
But compared to all the benefits of coconut oil, a little bit more of sink cleaning is a small price to pay.
Here Are 50 Amazing Uses for Coconut Oil
If you love this DIY toothpaste recipe, and the fact that it actually works, don’t be afraid to try to make other products yourself too! Because why should a product that we’d use for a few weeks be packaged in a plastic container that will last longer than we’ll be alive?
Happy eco-friendly DIY creating!
