Don’t Want to Get Sick This Season? Here Are 5 Simple Health Tips to Boost Your Immunity

Everyone around you is sick, sneezing and coughing, and blowing their nose. They look miserable, and you wonder just how long you can hold the germs at bay before you catch a cold or the flu, or whatever else is going around.

Germs are everywhere – they’re inevitable and can’t be avoided. And take it from a former semi-germaphobe – it can become an obsession trying to stay “germ-free.” Well, my friends, this is actually our first mistake on the quest for staying healthy.

Germs aren’t always the enemy.

In fact, exposing yourself to germs every now and then (i.e. not dousing your hands in hand sanitizer every 15 minutes) can help build up your immune system so you have a better chance of fighting off whatever sick germs you come into contact with.
This new approach to germs combined with the following five tips will boost your immune system vitality and help you stay healthy year-round. The best part is these tips are easy to implement and don’t require a lot of effort.

Here Are 5 Easy Health Tips to Boost Your Immune System and Keep You Healthy:

1. Reach For the Superfoods

We’re all familiar with the power of superfoods, but there are certain superfoods that have particularly detoxifying benefits. While there are many detoxifying superfoods, a few of my favorites are: lemon, beetroot, dandelion tea, wheatgrass, blueberries, and cilantro.
Add these superfoods to your morning smoothie, or weave them into your meals throughout the day to keep your body’s systems functioning optimally.

2. Essential Oils Are Your Friends

Essential oils are one of my favorite forms of natural health and wellness. They are powerful concentrates of plant derivatives with a wide range of benefits. Here are some of my favorite essential oils for immunity:

  • Tea tree (or melaleuca) is antibacterial and antimicrobial – perfect for diffusing your space to kill germs
  • Oregano is also antimicrobial, packed with antioxidants, and an immune stimulant – perfect for putting on the bottoms of your feet if you feel sickness coming on
  • Eucalyptus helps clear congestion and open your sinuses – you can apply it topically to your chest
  • Cinnamon can help fight viruses and is also an immune stimulant – also good to put a few drops on the bottoms of your feet

3. Take Your Vitamins!

Perhaps the most obvious (or at least the most common knowledge) tip on the list – take your vitamins! Vitamin C has proven to be the miracle vitamin our parents and grandparents have always claimed it is, from immune support to anti-aging.
In addition to Vitamin C, Vitamin D is super effective for immune support and helps fight infections (including colds and the flu). Zinc is something I’ve taken for years if I feel something coming on or if I’ve been around sick people. Studies show that zinc can reduce the length of your cold by 50%.

4. Don’t Forget Your Herbs

Never underestimate the power of herbs! There is a wide range of amazing herbs out there that would require a full article unto itself, so I’ll just focus on a few of the most popular herbs for immune support:

  • Ashwagandha supports immune function and also has stress-relieving properties
  • Echinacea benefits the immune system by increasing your white blood cell count, which helps your body fight infection
  • Turmeric is one of my personal favorite wellness herbs – it boosts your immunity, reduces inflammation, and even helps with memory and cancer prevention
  • Maca Root promotes homeostasis within the body. It’s an immunity booster and also increases your energy levels

5. Drink Bone Broth

The health benefits of bone broth are vast – from improving your immune system function to reducing inflammation and improving gut health, bone broth packs a big health punch!
Sipping on something warm naturally calms the senses and reduces certain symptoms if you’re already feeling under the weather. To help prevent sickness and boost your immunity year-round, incorporate bone broth into your cooking, and sip on it as you would hot tea.

Use These Natural Health Tips to Stay Healthy This Season and Year-Round

Following these easy tips will help fortify your immune system, support all of your body’s systems, and keep you feeling healthy all year. When cold and flu season hit, it’s the best time to adopt healthy techniques to protect yourself and your family.
A few final health tips: Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, avoid too much sugar and alcohol (these can weaken your immune system), and get plenty of rest. These tips may sound rudimentary, but they can go a long way in keeping you healthy!
Cheers to your health.
