These 5 Gluten Free Life Hacks Will Totally Change the Way You See Gluten

Gluten sucks. Anyone on a gluten free diet knows this. But avoiding gluten sucks even more – because it’s in everything! These gluten free life hacks will help you navigate the world of gluten free and maybe, just maybe, help you realize that this diet isn’t really all that bad.

When I first went on a gluten free diet, I was so lost. I didn’t know semolina from sucrose and I had a lot to learn. Here are my top 5 life hacks that I’ve figured out over the years.

Here are 5 Gluten-Free Life Hacks You Need to Try

1. Eat More Veggies

I can hear you groaning “But I want pizza!” from here. Before you get your undies in a bunch, hear me out. Veggies are amazing because you can use them for just about anything!

Swap out your sandwich bread for butter lettuce, or swap your pizza crust for a cauliflower crust! You’ll reduce unnecessary calories, and the options are limitless. The best part is the ability to create something out of seemingly nothing. It just takes creativity – you’ll get there!

2. Color Code Everything

If you’re like me, and you share a kitchen with gluten-eaters, listen up! Pick your favorite color (mine is teal) and go to town. While this is an investment up front, it’ll save you from the headache of cross-contamination.

Pots, pans, spatulas, toasters, mixing bowls, everything that could be shared in a kitchen. Trust me. You’ll breathe easier at night knowing there’s no chance gluten could be in your home-cooked meals.

3. Forget DIY

I know it’s tempting to make your own flour blends, cereals, and other treats. The first few months I was gluten free I was making things from scratch non-stop. But it’s not worth it!

So many new and amazing gluten free products are out there. Use them! It’s really not worth the effort of dragging your butt to 15 different stores to get all the specialty items you need to make one treat.

Here are some of my favorite GF products that make life easier:

  • Schar Ciabatta Rolls
  • Kinnikinnick Cinnamon Sugar Donuts
  • King Arthur All Purpose Flour
  • Tinkyada Brown Rice Pasta
  • Daiya Cheezy Mac
  • Nature’ s Path Organic Cereal
  •

    4. Don’t Try So Hard

What I really mean is: don’t try so hard to make other people happy. I can’t tell you how many times someone has picked a specific restaurant to make sure I could eat a side salad, or made me a specially-prepared dish in their gluten-filled kitchen.

It’s obvious these people have good intentions, so I went along with it for years. I ate my side salad and pretended it was enough, and I suffered through stomach pains from a home-made dish that was totally cross-contaminated.

You don’t have to stress yourself out because all your friends really want to eat at a restaurant that has nothing for you. I know. It sucks. But in this case, eat beforehand and tell everyone you’re just there to have a drink and socialize.

    5. GF Items Are Better Toasted

I wish someone would have told me this before I ate who knows how many rubbery, unappetizing sandwiches! You don’t have to pine for the bread you used to buy – gluten free bread is actually pretty good when you toast it! As a general rule, gluten free things are better toasted.

What Gluten Free Life Hacks Saved You?

When I found out I had celiac disease over 6 years ago now, my life went topsy turvy. It was just my mom and me figuring out this foreign world together. I wish I would’ve had someone unveiling gluten free life hacks to me!

Hopefully these life hacks remind you that you’re not alone, and there are many ways to make the best out of this diet. With a little creativity and know-how, you won’t be missing gluten ever again!
