Can Drinking Tequila Actually Help You Lose Weight?

Have you ever tried to lose weight? It’s exhausting . . . and there are countless products and diet plans out there that claim to help. One particularly surprising claim that’s recently emerged is tequila for weight loss.

Yes, there are actually studies that research drinking tequila to lose weight. And no, this is not a joke. Curious about the details? Read on!

A Quick Overview of Tequila

Tequila is an objectively strong drink (it usually contains about 38% alcohol) made from blue agave, a plant native to the sandy soils of Mexico. It’s named after the city which grows the lion’s share of agave for commercial use – Tequila, state of Jalisco.

What makes blue agave such a fabulous ingredient to create alcoholic beverages with is the exceptionally high amount of sugars in it, mainly fructose.

In terms of health benefits (i.e. what could potentially help you lose weight), a different class of sugars sparks the interest of the scientific community. They’re looking at agavins (agave – agavins . . . get it?), which are indigestible carbohydrates of the fructan group.

How the Agavins in Tequila Could Help You Lose Weight

So what’s with all the hype around agavins? I’m glad you asked.

As you may know, most scientific discoveries and hypotheses are tested on animals first. If animal studies show promising results, the researchers carefully move on to human trials. That said, there haven’t been many serious trials of the effects of agavins on human health, but the results of animal trials are pretty neat.

Here are four studies on the effect that agavins have on weight loss:

A 2014 study revealed that regular consumption of agavins decreases ghrelin levels by a whopping 16-42%, depending on the source of the fructans. Ghrelin, a.k.a. the “hunger hormone,” is one of the main physiological factors behind the sensation of hunger in our bodies, so agavins could become the next big thing in appetite suppression.

A 2015 study on overweight mice reported that agavins can reverse metabolic disorders, including abnormal levels of blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Also, agavins modulated the hormones involved in the regulation of food intake.

According to a 2017 study on mice, taking agavins significantly accelerates weight loss. Scientists believe the acceleration could be the result of beneficial changes in the intestinal microbiota (the microbes that live in your gut (gut health)). According to this study, agavins promote the growth of healthy bacteria even better than prebiotics do!

Agavins could also help decrease triglyceride accumulation in the liver that accumulates as a result of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (which is basically obesity of the liver). With this disease, fats get accumulated in the organ’s tissue and interfere with its health and functions.

Now For the Kicker: How Much Tequila Should You Drink to Lose Weight?

Well, I hate to be the killjoy here but . . . it seems that none is the best answer, at least when it comes to weight loss.

Let me explain.

Yes, studies show that agavins could be great for your health. Yes, it looks like agavins could help you lose weight. But the amount of agavins present in tequila is simply not that high, because most of them get broken down during the process of fermentation and distillation.

Consuming a bit of blue agave syrup or blue agave nectar seems like a much more valid approach altogether, at least at the moment. Currently, there are no available agavin supplements on the market, and this is unlikely to change in the following years, as multiple studies are still being performed.

Moral of the Story? Tequila is Great, But Maybe Not For Losing Weight

Sorry, folks. Tequila is fine, but not for losing weight. Blue agave syrup or nectar seems like a better option, but the real fun will begin as soon as the first agavin supplement product appears on the market.

Until that day, there are plenty of ways you can stay fit, stay healthy, and lose weight. You could hit the gym, the yoga studio, or try these 10 minute at-home workouts at your convenience. You can learn to eat the foods that your body is craving and heal your gut from the inside out with probiotics.

Whichever method you choose to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, here’s to a strong, healthy body!
