Easy-to-Make DIY Essential Oil Bug Spray

Can we get a hooray for summer on the way and spring in full bloom?!? It’s a beautiful time of year with flowers blossoming and temperatures rising. But that also means bug season! And as we all know, bug bites can be such a pesky annoyance during our outdoor fun.
What’s worse is that some insects carry disease, making it even more important to protect ourselves against bug bites. Whether you’re traveling, hiking, camping, or just enjoying time outside, it’s important to shield yourself with bug spray.
Before you reach for that store-bought bottle filled with harsh chemicals and not-so-good-for-you ingredients, try making your own DIY bug spray at home! All you need is a few essential oils, and you’ll have a super effective bug spray without any harmful ingredients.
How to make your own bug spray using essential oils:
The essential oils you’ll need:
For mosquitoes: citronella, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus
For fleas: cedarwood, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lemongrass
For ticks: rose, geranium, juniper
How to make:
Mix ½ cup witch hazel, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, 40 drops of the above essential oil formula (ie if your formula contains two oils, use 20 drops of each) in an 8-ounce spray bottle (ideally a glass bottle).
Apply your DIY bug spray to exposed skin and repeat as often as needed. Be safe and protect yourself when you’re outside this season so you can focus more on having fun and less on getting bit!
