Why We Heart Wanderlust: A Yoga Festival and Mindfulness Movement

We pride ourselves on bringing you the latest news and information on yoga, health and wellness. If you are reading this article, you have in some way been influenced by yoga and the community that it builds. Indeed, yoga is not the pose, it’s not the mat, it’s not the studio you attend, or the teacher you love. Yoga is a way of life. Yoga is a way of living your life. This year, we are proud to be participating in one of the world’s most popular and renowned yoga festivals, Wanderlust.
 
Yoga festivals have steadily been growing in popularity worldwide. Wanderlust launched their first event in 2009 in Squaw Valley, California, and has truly set the standard in the realm of yoga festivals. So what is the Wanderlust mission? To inspire yogis to seek better food and promote a better earth with the intention, awareness, and creativity embodied by yoga. Each event is centered on mindful living, encompassing everything from our yoga practice to the way we eat.
 
The founders themselves are seasoned practitioners, and they use the practice as a point of convergence for the arts, spirituality, meditation, environmentalism, organics and conscious consumerism. They find themselves expanding every year, attracting new communities of mountain bikers, trendy foodies, and any soul brave enough to journey the path of self-discovery while promoting a better planet. Needless to say, this movement is 100% YouAligned.
 
Along with providing an expansive playground for fellow yogis to frolic, Wanderlust has given a new voice to many great challenges facing our world today ranging from starvation, political upheaval, and natural disasters. This voice has called forth musicians and artists from around the world to a stage where creative expression is both encouraged and upheld. Wanderlust has hosted such artistic greats as Moby, Common, Krishna Das, and Ziggy Marley.
 
As Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” That’s the vessel with which Wanderlust hopes to change the world; not by saying or doing, but by evoking an emotional human need to shed light on the darkness in and around us.
 
In addition to answering global cries for positive and empowered change, Wanderlust puts forth tenacious effort in supporting local communities. They adhere to the ideal that “we are what we eat,” and put it to action by supporting local farms and purchasing organic and sustainably grown foods for each festival that they hold. This means that by attending, you are not only promoting inner peace and wellness, but are also promoting local and sustainable consumerism. To quote their mission statement, “Mass action requires awareness,” and with this they’ve attracted the support of Prana, Manduka, LuLuLemon, and Earth Balance, to name a few.
 
Webster defines “wanderlust” as a great desire to travel and rove about. The mass gathering of yogis at each festival reminds us that no matter where we are from, we are all in this journey together. Join us in this desire to make our world a better place. To the intention, awareness and artistic flair of this yoga festival, we can only hope to add depth to a pool rippled by the desire to better the world we live in.
 
If you can’t afford a full-price ticket, Wanderlust provides generous volunteer opportunities for all ages and backgrounds. If you can’t attend a particular event but want to get behind this awesome movement, you can still show support by spreading the word.
